German integration course

German integration courses at Deutschinsitut Wien

In principle, every person who is not a EU/EEA national who intends to stay in Austria for a longer period of time (more than 3 months) must be able to prove, before entering the country, that they have knowledge of the German language at A1 level (“German before arrival”). A tourist visa is only valid for a period of 3 months. Those who enter on a tourist visa must not of course have any prior knowledge of German!

Turkish citizens are exempt from these regulations. For a list of the requirements you must fulfil please check directly with your consulate/embassy in Turkey and with the ‘Magistrat 35 der Stadt Wien’.

People who are not EU/EEA nationals and who have a particular resident permit or would like to extend the residence permit must have completed Module 1 of the NEW Integration Agreement. The OLD Integration Agreement applies for all those who came to Austria before 01.07.2011 but after 2003. In order for all those who signed the OLD integration agreement during this period to extend their residents permit they must achieve Module 2 of the OLD integration agreement.

Immigrants must be able to demonstrate within 2 years German language ability at A2 level. With this they have fulfilled Module 1 of the NEW integration agreement or respectively Module 2 of the OLD integration agreement.

People who apply for permanent residence or citizenship must have completed Module 2 of the NEW integration agreement upon application. Proficiency in German at B1 level must be demonstrated. An application for permanent residence is possible, at the earliest, after 5 years of residency in Austria.
